Nowadays, when we plan a trip, what questions do we ask ourselves when choosing a new destination? A quiet place where we can disconnect and recharge? A place with amazing beaches? Big mountains? A big city? Are we willing to step out or our comfort zone and visit a place under the radar?

Abruzzo is this magnificent region located in central Italy that, in one way or another, answers every question we make ourselves when it comes to choosing a new place to visit. The reasons to visit Abruzzo are numerous, but in this particular post, we want to share with you 6 reasons (based on our experience), why you should add it to your bucket list.

Reason 1: the best time to visit Abruzzo is now

There is no better time to visit Abruzzo than now. No matter the season, in Abruzzo you will always find magnificent experiences of all kinds. You will be able to choose between 240 km of ski slopes or 133 km of coast with a wide range of beaches. If you are the type of person who likes the intermediate seasons, a long walk through the woods and sentieri abruzzesi to enjoy the spectacle of colours that nature offers us in spring and autumn might be a pleasant experience.

Reason 2: wide range of options to practice slow and sustainable tourism

As the greenest region in Europe, Abruzzo offers a high range of activities to practice slow and sustainable tourism. Il Bosso, a dynamic company that operates in the environmental and tourism sector, has been committed since its inception to promote ecological sensitivity and knowledge about Abruzzo’s environment. They offer a wide range of options such as canoeing and kayak in various places of the region, including what is to be considered the cleanest river in Europe, the river Tirino, and in other representative places like the costa dei trabocchi. E-bike tours and trekking through the national parks and nature reserves are also available. Options are endless!

In addition and no less important, there are several projects to promote slow and sustainable tourism within the region. The Emblematic Project, is an eco-journey that will allow you to get to know Abruzzo in its most splendid facets and the Project Nexum Equum Ippovia del Gran Sasso, which aims to recover the longest ippovia (horse track) in Italy. We had a little chat about it with Damiano Crognali, a filmmaker, writer and podcaster who filmed a video, not long ago, to show his trip to the ippovia.

Reason 3: ideal spot to connect with nature and yourself

Due to the nature of its territory, which covers an extensive coastline along with a vast mountain area and its slowness, Abruzzo is an ideal spot to disconnect and recharge mind and body.  Simple but powerful techniques such as forest bathing, meditation or just going to enjoy the sunrise on one of its beautiful beaches, can have an important and super positive effect on our mental and physical health.

Reason 4: you won't be hungry

There is no better way to get to know a place than through its culinary traditions, and when it comes to food, Abruzzo is a festival you don’t want to miss. Based on where you are in Abruzzo, you can taste traditional and delicious plates, that go from the famous spaghetti alla chitarra, pipindune e ove, le virtu’ teramane, brodo alla vastese, arrosticini and much more. In addition to this, Abruzzo’s harvest is one of the finest, well known are the montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the cerasuolo d’Abruzzo and the pecorino.

Marino Cardelli, Abruzzo’s smart ambassador and founder and director of Experience BellaVita, a family-run and independent tour operator, offers a wide range of culinary experiences in Abruzzo. A truly Abruzzo’s culinary experience is guaranteed with Marino! Among the services Experience BellaVita offers, it’s possible to find: traditional Abruzzese cooking with his 85 years old nonna Amina (you won’t find a better teacher!), winery visits and testing, farmers market tours, food box experience and much more. Options are there for you to choose from!

Reason 5: it preserves the magic of being untouched

One-third of Abruzzo’s territory is established as national parks and nature reserves, which means that the region is still on the fringes of the effects caused by the expansion of human activity in general. Most of the towns preserve their original structure. In addition, natural resources as beaches, lakes, waterfalls and mountains, (some of them not easily accessible to the public), still maintain a “virgin state” that allows us to fully enjoy these places (no matter this, we always have to be gentle and kind to the environment).

Secular traditions such as the Transumanza (seasonal herd shift), included in 2019 by UNESCO on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, are still intact and being practised.

Reason 6: Abruzzo is budget friendly

In comparison to other cities like Rome, Milan, Venice and Florence, Abruzzo will allow you to adapt your needs to a budget in an easier way. Prices across various services can be considered convenient. In certain restaurants it’s possible to pay a fixed price, around 25 euros, and get several dishes, desserts and drinks. In most of the coffee shops, it’s possible to get a breakfast for two people that includes two cornetti (a type of croissant that can be filled with nutella, white chocolate, jam, pistachio cream and more), 2 cappuccini and an orange juice for no more than 8 euros. In addition, hospitality prices can be around 40 euros and 80 euros per night, depending on the number of guests and place within the region.
