Feudo Antico: a winemaking project in Abruzzo rooted in a thousand years old tradition

April 06, 2024

As you may know by now, Abruzzo is nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea in Central Italy, boasting not only breathtaking landscapes and magic beaches but also a very rich viticultural heritage. Its diverse soil provides the perfect canvas for cultivating an array of exceptional wines that captivate the senses and tell the story of this enchanting land. It is true that other regions like Tuscany may steal the lime when it comes to Italian wine however, Abruzzo quietly offers a wide and unique flavour options waiting to be discovered.

Not far away from our hometown (Giuliano Teatino) there is Tollo, a charming village immersed in the Colline Teatine which is well known for its wine production. In fact, Tollo is considered a Città del Vino and for some, la capitale del vino abruzzese. This is why we decided to pack our things and head to lovely Tollo to find out more about its wine heritage and tradition and we came across the perfect place, Il Feudo Antico.

Feudo Antico

Feudo Antico was founded in 2004 and during the replanting of the first Pecorino vineyards in 2013 the remains of an ancient Roman villa and various tools of the time for preserving wine were discovered. Several archeological excavations were carried on as a way to claim the culture and roots of the whole area, and also, to celebrate Feudo Antico’s winemaking project: “a journey that began in 2004 and that is well rooted in a thousand year old tradition.”

At Feudo Antico, they pursue sustainable wine-grape growing and in 2019 an important recognition was granted: DOCG Tullum (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin), one of the smallest appellations of origin in Italy and a true certificate of excellence for the whole Tollo area.

Feudo Antico - Wine tour in Abruzzo

The experience

Feudo Antico offers a wide range of experiences so you can fully immerse yourself “nella tradizione vinicola Abruzzese”. Bookings can be easily made online or if you prefer you can drop Feudo Antico’s team an email to reserve your spot and make the payment when you are on site.

We selected the Tasting Pure experience which includes 3 autochtonous wines of Abruzzo tradition, meaning three goblets: two of them choose from organic wines and one choice from the Charmat Method sparkling wine, in combination with bread and extra virgin olive oil and a typical cold cuts and cheeses. All for 25 euros per person.

We started the experience with a wide tour through the facilities and wine cellar. The venue itself is very modern however, we loved that feeling of being back in time while admiring the remains of the ancient Roman Villa, which are spread all over Feudo Antico.  Every single aspect of the tour was highly captivating, specially the Anforas, those big vessels dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Roman and of which is said that it does not add additional flavours, what you taste and smell is all coming from nature and grapes so, Abruzzo in its pure essence!

There is also a terrace where while you drink (and eat as well), you can admire the wonderful panoramic view of the vineyards and the Adriatic Sea.

Feudo Antico is also open for special events. In fact, apart from hosting us for our very first wine tour in Abruzzo, it was the place where we celebrated the baptism of my lovely nephew, and from that moment grandson! No need to say that the food and of course, the wine, were magnificent. A proper Abruzzese experience: a big table, among family and friends and tons of food and wine!

Plan your visit

As previously mentioned, tours can be easily booked online and wether you are a seasoned wine enthusiast or just beginning to explore the world of Italians wines, Feudo Antico is the ideal spot to get in touch with Abruzzo winemaking tradition.

Lastly, a special mention to our host, Sandro. We felt warmly welcomed from the very beginning and his enthusiasm not only about the wines but also about the archeological findings was contagious. He definitely made us walk away with a higher appreciation for Abruzzesi wines. Thank you Sandro!
