We found it the way the best restaurants are always found: by accident. A quick search for somewhere worth eating in the area. It came up second. We booked. And it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals we’ve had in Abruzzo.

The first is Masciarelli Tenute Agricole, one of the most important wine estates in all of Abruzzo, founded in 1981 by Gianni Masciarelli and now producing 22 labels across all four provinces of the region. The beating heart of the winery is here, in this small village, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

The second is La Vineria di Salnitro.

La Vineria di Salnitro is housed in a 17th-century stone building right in the centre of the village. Step inside and you’re met with an unexpected combination: medieval stone walls and pop-art decor, rustic and irreverent at the same time. It’s been open for over 18 years and has become a local cult favourite, known not just for its food but for its wine-themed events, live music nights, and Cabaret Voltaire dinners that combine food, music, and art under the open sky.

When the weather is right, which in Abruzzo is most of the year, they open the terrace. That’s where we sat, on a warm evening, surrounded by the calm of village life, to celebrate my mother’s birthday.

It was the right choice.

Every day, the kitchen works with whatever is fresh and available. The team comes to your table personally to explain the dishes, describe where each ingredient comes from, and walk you through how it was prepared. It’s a simple idea, but the effect is profound. You’re not choosing from a list. You’re being cooked for.

The pasta with black garlic was, without exaggeration, one of the best things I’ve eaten. The kind of dish that stays in your memory long after the meal is over. Simple ingredients, extraordinary execution, the confidence of a kitchen that knows exactly what it’s doing.

A roasted onion arrived at some point, beautifully presented, rustic and elegant at once. It tasted like Abruzzo: earthy, honest, surprising.

To drink, we chose a bottle of Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo by Ilda Vini, a local rosé with a bright colour and fresh, fruity notes that moved alongside the food rather than competing with it. Cerasuolo is one of Abruzzo’s signature wines, and this one was exceptional.

For dessert, a semifreddo ai frutti di bosco, creamy and cold and exactly what the evening needed.
