The City Next Door

5 reasons why Abruzzo is the ideal destination after Coronavirus

June 10, 2020

We have been keeping an eye on the news to find out when Italy and other European countries will reopen their borders again in order to inaugurate the holiday season for 2020.
The good news is that Italy re-opened its borders for tourists on the 3rd of June! The not so good news is that (understandably) many people are still reluctant to travel as coronavirus isn’t fully under control yet as we impatiently wait for the vaccine to come out and be made available for everyone.

Why Abruzzo is the ideal destination after COVID-19?

Going back to the good news bit, we have put together five reasons why Abruzzo is the ideal destination to travel after Covid-19. Let us give you a hand and remind you where is The City Next Door, and how to get there so you can start to plan your trip!

1.- One of the least affected regions by Covid-19 in Italy

Perhaps due to not having crowded spaces which makes it easy to follow social distancing rules and keep 2 metres apart, Abruzzo was one of the least affected areas in Italy by coronavirus. According to the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (it shows the whole data by region), until the 8th June Abruzzo had 3,265 cases compared to 90,389 cases in Lombardy which was the most affected region in northern Italy. That only represents 1,4% of the total.

2.- Plenty of open spaces

We all love Italy, always beautiful in every corner, but it’s not a secret that during summertime it’s almost a challenge to really enjoy it due to the high amount of crowded places. Visiting Abruzzo will give you the full Italian experience without the busy streets, long queues and overcrowded restaurants!

Abruzzo is known as “the greenest region in Europe”, which translates to an incredible amount of open spaces. Do you know where the virus is weaker? Exactly! In open spaces like parks and mountains. The region is not only full of magical natural reserves, parks and wildlife preserves, there’s also plenty of beautiful warm beaches and private lidos, perfect spots to get your summer tan. If you need some visual motivation, check our post about the breathtaking Scanno or this incredible trip between the mountains and the seaside to Pineto and Silvi for example!

3.- It will be easy to stick to your budget

One of the best things about Abruzzo is its affordable prices across many services. As for example, you can buy high-quality food that it’s locally grown and sourced which contributes to the sustainability of the region (and your pocket!).

4.- No need to use public transport

In fact, the best possible way to move around Abruzzo is by car. Surely is by far the most comfortable option. But, apart from that, in Abruzzo you won’t be stuck in traffic and most importantly you won’t like to miss all the landscapes the region has to offer especially if you are driving right next to the coast or very deep in the mountain locations. If you need to rent a car, Avis and Europcar offer a good service at competitive prices, and their offices are just right after you collect your luggage.

5.- Not too much hassle at the airport

Abruzzo Airport is small and easy to go through. Recently it was expanded from 2 to 5 gates. When you arrive at the airport the process is quite straightforward, and generally, there is only one flight at a time which reduces considerably the number of people hanging around. Once you get through the security check, you can get to your flight gate in less than 5 minutes. The waiting area is big, considering the dimensions of the airport which makes the place unlikely to be packed. In all our trips to Abruzzo, we have never seen the airport crowded!
