VILLAGES IN AQUILA

VILLAGES IN AQUILA

L’Aquila doesn’t compete — it dominates. Set deep in the heart of Abruzzo, the province of L’Aquila is home to the highest concentration of beautiful villages in the region, where medieval streets, stone houses, and mountain backdrops feel almost untouched by time. Places like Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Rocca Calascio, Scanno, and Castel del Monte are just a glimpse of what’s here — a landscape where history, architecture, and raw nature come together in a way that feels uniquely Abruzzo.

But even beyond these iconic names, countless smaller villages are scattered across the province, each with its own identity, traditions, and quiet beauty — making L’Aquila not just the most impressive, but the most complete destination for village-hopping in Abruzzo.

WHERE IS AQUILA?

Located in western Abruzzo, the province of L'Aquila is the most mountainous area of the region, home to the iconic Gran Sasso. Entirely inland, it borders the region of Lazio — making it the closest part of Abruzzo to Rome — and is defined by dramatic landscapes, remote valleys, and some of Abruzzo’s most beautiful hilltop villages.
