Osteria la Balena, a nice place in the costa dei trabocchi

osteria la balena, a nice place in the costa dei trabocchi

As we were finishing breakfast, we were deciding which was going to be the place to visit that day. After a very short deliberation we decided to go to San Vito Chietino, Armando had recently been there so he recommended it to us.

So, we left the house at around mid-morning, it was nice and sunny. My husband started to drive towards Ortona so we could take the Strada Statale Adriatica SS16 and stay there for about 45mins in order to arrive to San Vito Chietino ready and eagers to dip our bodies into its perfectly warm and clean waters, pretty straight forward, right?!

Well, as you could have guessed by now, we couldn’t find San Vito Chietino. Once we arrived to the Costa dei Trabocchi we started to drive back and forth looking for an entrance, a sign or something that will lead us to San Vito Chietino but it just wasn’t happening. To this day we still don’t know why we couldn’t find it . . . BUT what we did find was Osteria La Balena! My husband and I love eating out and trying new restaurants so we couldn’t leave Costa dei Trabocchi without trying one of those places located on the side of the SS16.

My parents, my husband and I having an amazing lunch right at the sea

Why did we chose Osteria La Balena? I honestly don’t know, but looking back it was perhaps the amazing views of the Adriatic Sea from the outside tables that got our attention. Also, my parents were with us and we wanted them to have a nice meal by the sea which they hadn’t had in a really long time.

Looking at this picture makes me want to go back to La Balena asap! and it also reminds me of what Italian food is all about: simplicity, the highest quality products and of course, flavours greatness!. This is exactly what we were craving after a nice dip in the Trabocco located behind the restaurant.

Our expectations were definitely met! The view and the food were awesome, we were having quite an early lunch so we practically had the place for ourselves. The value for money ratio was great, the service was brilliant. We spent €100 approximately, which covered four people and included a couple of starters, four main dishes (the fish was caught from the sea next to us) and a bottle of Pecorino, a typical white wine from Abruzzo. We would come back without a shadow of a doubt!
